2 things about anger you need to know

Yes, anger is an emotional state, but it triggers a hormonal stress response in your body.

When you get angry: - Your adrenal glands secrete Cortisol (stress hormone) in big quantities - Your brain secretes Norepinephrine

The result of that is: 1. Your blood pressure increases 2. Your arteries narrow 3. Your blood sugar shoots up 4. Your heart rate shoots up 5. All functions unnecessary to deal with a physical stress response are shut down, including: reproduction systems, immunity systems, maintenance systems (this is why cells in the brain actually "die" when people are chronically stressed).

After the stress response dissipates, now you have too much sugar in your blood, so your Insulin shoots up. This causes your blood sugar to come crashing down, and you get cranky and hungry, craving carbs & sweets in particular.

So if you get angry 3 times a day, all of these things happen to your body 3 times a day.

The second thing you need to know about anger is: "it's a habit".

Studies have shown that you can increase or decrease how many times you get angry and over what the same way you build a habit:

If you let yourself get angry 3 times a day, it becomes easier to get angry the next day, and the next, and the next... just like a habit.

If you "catch" yourself before you get angry and control it (take a deep breath, walk away, close your eyes, relax), then (just like a habit), it becomes easier to control it the next time.

Over time, you'll find yourself "calm" for 99% of your day, almost never letting anything "get you angry" and trigger that stress hormonal response which is highly detrimental to your health.

Oh, one more thing: your anger also triggers a hormonal stress response in your loved ones too - so your anger is hurting the health of people you love... think about that for a second...
